Oreo Moon Phase Lab — 3/13/15

Who knew Space Science was so yummy?! Solar System Candy lab last week then our Oreo Lab today!!

Thanks to all my parent volunteers for supplying our Oreo cookies!! The kids were very appreciative.

We used our cookies to model the moon phases. 🙂

Here are pictures of all of our excited 4th graders as they worked on their lab.

We are going to try to wrap up our Space Unit by Friday of next week. We still have 2 Life Science standards to cover, and I’m wanting to review before we take our Aspire test on April 27.

What’s Happening this Week — 3/9 to 3/13

I hope everyone enjoyed playing in the snow and are now ready to jump back in and finish 4th grade!! I was beginning to think we weren’t ever going to finish this newsletter!! 🙂

Monday — We are reviewing week 16 vocabulary and newsletter. I’m checking their moon booklet for a daily grade, and then we are learning about lunar and solar eclipses.

Tuesday – Week 16 Quiz

Wednesday – We will have an altered schedule today due to the Rachel’s Challenge assembly at the middle school. This challenge has a great message for the kids – I’m so excited that we were invited! When we get back, we will start digging into Week 17 vocabulary and newsletter. This newsletter is about Earth’s Place in the Universe.

Thursday – We will finish up from previous day and we will have our Moon Phase Lab. I’ll post pictures afterward. 🙂

Friday – We are going to read about Gravity and Tilt. We will be taping two pages into our notebooks about Day and Night. We will be reading one page, and on the other we will illustrate the day/night process.

We will finish up week 17 newsletter next week. We will be spending a few days on Space Exploration before we jump into Life Science.

Our Moon — 3/2/15

Due to our weather days last week, we are continuing to work on our Week 16 newsletter this week. We are planning on testing on Friday if our weather permits.

Today we reviewed our 6 vocabulary words. We completed a Moon Powerpoint and Graphic Organizer. The graphic organizer is our Daily Work grade for the week. I’ll be checking it one day later in the week for a grade.

This PowerPoint and notes were purchased from the Science Penguin. I love her resources. It is available for purchase here.

Planet Booklet 2/23/15

Due to our crazy winter weather, we are off track with my lesson plans. I’m hoping that we can be finished and test next Tuesday on our week 16 newsletter (3/3.) Stay tuned though – if our snow comes in that may change!

Last Thursday I passed out planet booklets and we began working on these in class. These booklets will be a Daily Work grade for the week. They have to be colored on the outside, and each planet has a fact written about it. This booklet completed is their ticket to participate in our Planet Candy Lab tomorrow!! Yum!! I’m having trouble with a few of our 4th graders not completing their work — I’m hoping the allure of candy with learning will cure that!!

Pictured below is a student example. 🙂

Physical Science Title Page NB 102 – 4/9/14

Today in Science we spent the first half of class with Mrs. Romine, our school counselor. For the second half of class, we reviewed our Daily Math, and taped in two new entries in our Science Notebook. We taped in our Physical Science Alabama Course of Study objectives on NB 101, and on NB 103 we taped in our Chapter 14 Lesson 1 and 2 Study Guide on Sound. We will start this four day unit tomorrow in class, and we will test on Tuesday of next week.

Students have had time in class to work on NB 102 Physical Science Title Page. Pictured above are two fourth graders who did a fantastic job on their notebook entry. I will be checking this page on Friday for a Daily Work Grade.

Solar System Lab and Ch 18 Test Review — 4/7/14

20140407-121018.jpg

Who knew Space Science was so yummy? First, Moon Phases with Oreo cookies, and today we completed a Solar System Candy Lab. I saw this over at Pinterest, and thought it was just too cute. Our 4th graders loved it!! This also worked well as a test review of our planets. Tomorrow students will have to write the planets in order from the Sun.

On Wednesday, we will start our last Science Unit for the year — Physical Science. We will spend four quick days on Sound. I am super excited for our lab — stay tuned!! More information to come on Wednesday/Thursday of this week.

For fellow teachers, this is the link to the information about the Solar System lab and the printout. It is located here.

What’s Happening in Science — 3/31 – 4/8

This week in Science we are starting our last chapter (Chapter 18) in Space Science. Our study guide for this chapter are the two pages in the above picture. Our Chapter 18 Quiz will be on Tuesday, April 8. It will consist of 18 questions — 10 from the vocabulary on NB 98, and 8 from listing our planets in order from the sun.

Rotate vs. Revolve 3/4/14

20140304-122004.jpg

Today in Science we reviewed our Study Guide for our Ch 17 Lesson Quiz 1 on Thursday. After reviewing, we illustrated the differences between Rotate and Revolution. This is a harder concept for the students — and I wanted to help them “see” the differences. The bottom picture is my notebook example, and the student at the top showing his notebook was celebrating his birthday today!! 🙂

Tomorrow kicks off Lesson 2 of Chapter 17. We will be focusing on the moon, moon phases, and the sun. Our Lesson 2 Quiz is planned for next Thursday. More information to come!! 🙂

What’s Happening in Science — Week of 3/3/14

20140303-115222.jpg

It’s hard to believe that this year is going by so fast!! This is the last week for grades in the third 9 weeks grading period!!

This week we are on Daily Math Week 23. We will be testing on Friday. These are coming home on Tuesday this week due to Read Across America Week on Monday!! 🙂

What’s Happening in Science this Week:
On Tuesday, students will be receiving a Chapter 17 Lesson 1 Study Guide. This chapter has so much information — so I thought it would be better for the kids if we split it up into two tests. This test will cover our first 5 vocabulary words, and all of our information we learned last week. This information is located on Science Notebook pages 84 – 92 — and our test will be based on our Study Guide. I snapped a picture of it for any kiddos that have misplaced their guide, and it is also located under Science Tests/Homework on my webpage. This test will be on Thursday.

This week in Lesson 2 we will be focusing on the moon, the lunar eclipse/solar eclipse, and on Friday we will begin learning about the different phases of the moon. We will finish our Chapter next week, and we will have a fun Oreo Moon Phase lab before heading to Chapter 18. 🙂
