Conductor/Insulator Lab — 10/16/14

Today in class we made closed circuits to complete our Conductor/Insulator Lab. I loved seeing the kids expressions and hearing their squeals as they lit their light bulbs for the first time! Here is an example of a completed closed circuit.

IMG_5792.JPG

After students completed their circuits, they worked on their conductor and insulator page in their notebook.

IMG_5713.JPG

Here are some pictures of our lab groups. I was so impressed with how hard they worked, and how fast they put their circuits together!!

Sound Lab Stations – 9/24/14

This week we have been learning about Sound. Today we had our Sound Lab Station day. Students rotated between two stations. The first station was using straws to make duck calls. We talked about how the differing lengths of the straws affected the sound the straw made. My 4th period worked the best together of any of my classes — so I snapped their pictures as they worked and videoed one of our Duck Call lab groups. Enjoy!

Here are a couple of pictures of other 4th period kiddos working on their duck calls. I know parents will LOVE me for this!! 🙂 The information for this lab, and the link to the lab pages are in the post below or located here.

The next two pictures are from our other lab station. This lab was called Vibrating Ruler station. We’ve been talking about the different pitches of sound in Science — and this lab was a great test for listening to the different pitches of sound from different lengths of rulers. I found this lab activity here.

What’s Happening in Science 9/15 – 9/19 — All About Energy

This week in Science we are working on our Week 5 newsletter – All About Energy. We will take our Quiz on Friday. It will be 17 questions — 10 questions from the newsletter and 7 vocabulary. The vocabulary words are located on page 14 in our Notebooks or the picture is below.

IMG_5153-0.JPG

Monday — We will review our vocabulary. We will read the Albert Einstein and Heat Energy sections from our newsletter. Then, we are creating page 15 in our Science notebook. This page will consist of us defining energy (the ability to do work) and we will illustrate it.

Tuesday —

We will review vocabulary words. Then, we will read Types of Energy from our newsletter and fill in our graphic organizer on NB 16. This will be our Daily Grade for the week. For anyone interested, I downloaded this graphic organizer on Teachers Pay Teachers. You can find it here.

IMG_5154.JPG

Wednesday — We will review our vocabulary words. Today we are learning about renewable/non renewable resources. We will create a page about this on NB 17 in our Science Notebooks.

Thursday — We are reviewing for our Science Quiz, and we are also learning about fossil fuels. We will be working on NB pages 18 and 19 in our Science Notebooks. For anyone interested, I downloaded these pages from The Science Penguin on Teachers Pay Teachers. You can find it here.

IMG_5155.JPG

Friday – Today we are testing on our newsletter, and students will have the rest of class time to work on any unfinished pages in their Science Notebooks. I will grade our Science Notebooks after we complete our Week 6 Newsletter.

What’s Happening in Science the week of 9/8 – 9/12

We are continuing to work on our Week 3 Newsletter this week — Matter Changes. On Monday — We are reviewing our 8 vocabulary words. These words are located on page 10 of our Interactive Science Notebooks or you can find them here. We will also read our Joseph Priestly spotlight, and learn about the Properties of Matter. The picture below is our notebook page for today. It is located on page 12 of our notebooks, and it will be part of our next notebook check. I purchased this sheet and the powerpoint we will use in class from The Science Penguin. It is located here for anyone interested.IMG_5044.JPG Tuesday — We are reviewing vocabulary, and we are reading the sections in our newsletter titled Science Then and Now/Nylon is Invented. We will be completing Author’s Purpose on NB page 13. It is pictured below. This sheet was an excellent opportunity for us to tie-in Reading and Science.  IMG_5045.JPG On Thursday we will take our Open Newsletter Quiz. This quiz will consist of their 8 vocabulary words, and important information from their newsletter. As we read our newsletter, we discuss, highlight, and write in important information that will help them on their quizzes.

On Friday, we will start our Week Newsletter 5 – All About Energy.More information to come!! I’m so excited about all the things we are learning.

What’s Happening in Science — 8/25 – 8/29

IMG_4869This week in Science we are studying Week 2 Newsletter Properties of Matter. Week 2 and 3 are combined — next week we will learning about Matter Changes. We will have a Daily Work grade on Tuesday, and our Open Newsletter Quiz will be on Friday.

Monday — Introduced new newsletter and our 6 new vocabulary words. We read page 1 of our Newsletter (Properties of Matter and the Biography of Patricia Bath). We highlighted our important information from today. All classes but 6th wrote our conclusions for our Great Banana Experiment.

Tuesday – We will review our vocabulary and learn about the States of Matter — Solid, Liquid, and Gases. Mrs. Goggans will do a neat demonstration, and we will watch a Scholastic Study Jam. We will also read Who Invented the Popsicle from our newsletter. Students will create a Solid, Liquid, and Gases page in their Science Notebook on page 8. They will define each term and draw an example. This will be a daily work grade for the week.

Wednesday – We will review vocabulary and yesterday’s lesson. We will read about Microscopes and Archimedes in our Science Newsletter. Then, we will learn about Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter and create a Notebook page on page 9.

Thursday – We will review vocabulary and any unfinished work. We will complete our Venn Diagram and our crossword puzzle that is in our Science Newsletter.

Friday — We will take our Open Newsletter Science Quiz. Students may work on any unfinished Science work after their Test.

Science Stations (Light Theme) — 4/25/14

Today in Science we rotated between 4 different stations. Our theme was Light. This activity was planned to wrap up our Light Unit. We will begin Friction on Monday.

Station 1 — How Does Light Pass Through?

Materials — White Paper, Plastic Wrap, Wax Paper, Aluminum Foil, and Colored Tissue Paper

At each station, students had to complete a lab sheet. During this lab, students were looking at each item and discovering — does light pass through it? Does it make a shadow? Is it opaque, transparent, or translucent?

** I found this lab at Teachers Pay Teachers. It is available for purchase here.

I loved this picture I snapped of these kiddos working together during our station. They all worked very hard today!!

This is the sheet students were responsible for completing during this station. The link is located above.

Station 2 — Shadows Observation

Materials — I laid out on our lab table random objects found in my desk. Two toy cars, pennies, glue, bracelet, leggos, etc. I found flashlights from our Science Kits that still worked — Yay!!

Students chose an object and drew it. Next,  they shined the flashlight over the object and drew its shadow.

** I also found this activity on Teachers Pay Teachers. The link is located here.

Station 3 –Bending Pencil Experiment

Materials – Plastic clear cups, Pencils, Water

Students placed a pencil in a cup with no water and drew what they saw. Next, students placed the pencil in a cup with water, and drew what they saw now. This lab was super cute, and many students said it was their favorite of all four. I found this lab and the next one at this great teacher blog that is located here. Thanks for the idea! It was a favorite!

This was the lab sheet students had to fill out.

Station 4 –Turning Arrow Experiment

Materials – Plastic clear cups, Water, Index Cards

Students got an index card and drew an arrow. They placed the card behind a clear cup filled with water. They then had to observe what happened next.

The lab sheet and the idea came from the same teacher blog from above that is located here. My 4th graders adored this — and many said they were going home to show their family. It’s not magic – It’s Science!!

Image

Our lab sheet — big thanks to the above teacher blog. The kids LOVED these 2 activities! 🙂

I have promised our 4th graders that we will do stations again this year — and I see using this  idea LOTS next year!! As students worked and chatted about their stations — I was such a proud Science teacher!! 🙂
